The challenge
Backups ran on Veritas Backup Exec to tape. Recovery depended on tapes being in the right place, and there was no written disaster recovery procedure that had been tested end to end.
What we did
- Replaced Backup Exec with Veeam Backup & Replication, with no gap in backup cover during the change.
- Moved off tape to a cloud backup strategy, so an offsite copy exists without anyone carrying media.
- Wrote the disaster recovery procedure: what comes back, in what order, and who does each step.
- Ran DR tests every three months and fed what each test found back into the procedure.
Outcome
What changed
- Veeam in place of Backup Exec
- Offsite copies in the cloud, not on tape
- A written, owned DR procedure
- DR tested every quarter
